Top Tips for Freshers!
My top tips for freshers week would be...
BE YOURSELF....
Don't try to put across an image that you're going to spend the rest of the year either franticly trying to keep up, or desperately trying to run away from. Set good foundations for who you are, and the type of person you want to be known as, and you'll be on for a winner.
BE CONFIDENT....
Don't be afraid of what people will think of you, even if you feel a bit weird at first! I did! Linked to the above point, let people see the real you and make friends from there. The friends you make are more likely to be genuine and better friends that way. Plus, it's time to let people know who you are and what you're about and there's no better time to start that than now. Put your love of God first, and then friends after. Life is best lived like that!
MAKE THE MOST OF IT....
You get tonnes of cool opportunities in fresher’s week and in your first year too, so get stuck in. The freebies can be awesome, and watch out for any coupons or offers, cos' you probably won't get them again! There's always loads going on, so you will always miss out on something, so enjoy the bits you do do!
IT'LL BE OVER BEFORE YOU KNEW IT HAD BEGUN....
This point is both positive and a caution. Firstly, don't spend any time worrying about it, because it goes ridiculously fast. Enjoy it. Just watch the wallet, or purse of course! It's only a week long, so try to keep an eye on what you're spending. I would suggest that you set yourself an idea of how much you want to spend and work around that. You may go a bit over, or even a wee bit under (well done if you achieve this!), but it really helps to at least have an idea of what you're aiming for. And of course, try and stick to it the best you can.
HAVE FUN....
Fun is not about spending everything you can, or drinking everything you can, or doing everything you can, or making friends with absolutely anybody and everybody you can. You will have the most fun when you make wise decisions that your at peace with, and from that place go out, make friends, get as much free stuff as you can, and you WILL have loads of fun!!!
Other top tips
- Tell your mum everything you did everyday in fresher’s week, if she wouldn’t approve don’t do it!
- Take advantage of all the free stuff you can, you will have a room full of random things but they will all have a memory that will make you laugh.
- Take a vitamin supplement everyday; halls food has no nutritious value.
- Leave your bedroom door open when you can (i.e. when not changing or sleeping both could have embarrassing consequences), people will wander in and out and it’s a great way to be welcoming and get to know people.
- Always have an emergency tenner stashed somewhere you never know when it could come in handy.
